Sambari Singh, a resident of Sadheikala village in Badagaon Gram Panchayat, started her transformative journey in livestock rearing three years ago with the support of Nydhee. Initially, Sambari and her family faced financial challenges and limited opportunities, relying on occasional daily wage labour for survival. That is until she was introduced to Nydhee’s goat rearing programme, which offered her a lifeline through training and support.
Sambari began her goat rearing venture with just two goats, provided as part of Nydhee’s livelihood enhancement initiative. At the time, she had no prior experience or knowledge of livestock management. However, the extensive training from Nydhee empowered her with the skills and best practices needed for successful goat rearing. She learned essential practices, including vaccination schedules, disease prevention, feeding, and general livestock management.
Over time, her efforts began to bear fruit. From the initial two goats, her herd steadily increased to 22 goats. This remarkable growth in her herd is a testament to her dedication and the effective strategies she learned from Nydhee. Sambari embraced all the best practices, such as ensuring timely vaccination and deworming of the goats. Each goat’s health and productivity improved, leading to increased survival rates and better-quality livestock for sale. One of the game-changing practices was maintaining a vaccination booklet designed by Nydhee. Each household participating in the program kept meticulous records of their livestock’s vaccination schedules. This structured approach not only ensured that all necessary shots were administered on time but also significantly reduced the incidence of diseases and infections. With healthier livestock, Sambari was able to sell Khasi goats at favourable market prices, which became a substantial source of income for her family.
In the second year of her goat-rearing journey, she started selling her goats. Her most recent sales have been a great success, earning her enough money to purchase a power tiller. This investment in her agricultural activities has made her even more self-reliant, as she now uses the power tiller for her farming activities, further boosting her income. Sambari has managed to uplift her entire family from the cycle of poverty through a combination of livestock rearing and agriculture.
Sambari’s story is not only about her individual success but also about her leadership within her community. As the leader of the Tarini Self-Help Group (SHG), she has inspired and motivated other women in the village to take up goat rearing. Her confidence and determination have become a beacon of hope for her fellow SHG members. Under her leadership, the group has made significant strides in livestock management and financial independence.
Her ability to transform from a novice goat rearer to a “Lakhpati Didi” is a story that resonates deeply with the women of her village. Today, Sambari is looked up to as a role model, not only for her financial success but for the way she has led her community toward a better future. The other women in her SHG are now actively engaged in goat rearing, following the same practices that have proven so effective for Sambari. They, too, maintain vaccination records and ensure their goats are receiving proper care, which has resulted in healthier herds and increased incomes.
Sambari Singh’s journey is a powerful example of how skill development, community support, and the right guidance can completely change the trajectory of a person’s life. From struggling to make ends meet, she has become a successful livestock rearer and a respected leader in her community. Her story highlights the importance of training, resilience, and collective action in creating sustainable livelihoods for rural women.
Now a confident entrepreneur and a Lakhpati Didi, Sambari continues to inspire others to follow in her footsteps, proving that with the right support and determination, anyone can achieve their dreams.
