Empowering a Community through Care

The Story of Junurani Naik, CAVE Volunteer

In the remote village of Jinkapadi in Nafri Gram Panchayat, Odisha, Junurani Naik’s journey from a homemaker struggling to make ends meet to a successful Community Agro-Veterinary Entrepreneur (CAVE) is one of determination, resilience, and empowerment. Her story stands as a powerful example of how the right opportunities and training can uplift not just an individual but an entire community.

A Challenging Beginning

Three years ago, life looked very different for Junurani. She had no livelihood of her own and was entirely dependent on her husband’s meagre earnings. Unfortunately, his struggles with alcoholism made their financial situation even more difficult, leading to significant hardship at home. With little income and few opportunities, she felt trapped in a cycle of poverty with no clear way out. But her determination to improve her circumstances, coupled with the support she received from the NGO Nydhee, led her on an inspiring path of transformation.

Training as a CAVE Volunteer

When Nydhee introduced the Community Agro-Veterinary Entrepreneurs (CAVE) program in her Gram Panchayat, Junurani saw an opportunity to change her life and the lives of those around her. The program aimed to provide community members, particularly women, with training in animal health and veterinary services, focusing on livestock such as goats and poultry. Junurani seized the opportunity and attended the series of training sessions offered.

Through hands-on workshops, she learned how to administer vaccinations, provide basic veterinary care, and support local farmers in managing the health of their livestock. These skills proved invaluable, not only for improving livestock health in her community but also for enabling her to earn an income and gain the respect and trust of her neighbours.

Transforming Lives as a CAVE Volunteer

After becoming a certified CAVE volunteer, Junurani’s life underwent a significant transformation. She now earns an average of ₹6,000 to ₹10,000 per month by providing critical veterinary services to goat and poultry farmers across five villages in the area. Her services include administering vaccinations such as deworming medicine, goat pox shots, PPR (Peste des Petits Ruminants), ENT shots, and booster doses to goats. For poultry, she ensures the birds receive deworming treatments and R2B shots, which are essential for preventing disease outbreaks.

Junurani no longer relies solely on her husband’s income; she has become a breadwinner in her own right. Her newfound independence and confidence have also had a positive impact on her family’s well-being, easing the financial burden and allowing them to improve their living conditions. In her own words, she finds immense satisfaction in being able to contribute meaningfully to her household while simultaneously serving her community.

Overcoming Challenges and Gaining Confidence

The journey was not without its challenges. Initially, Junurani felt nervous about administering injections and medicines to livestock, fearing she might make mistakes. But with each successful vaccination drive, her confidence grew. As word of her skills spread, local farmers began to trust her expertise, often calling on her as soon as their animals fell ill.

Junurani has become a crucial part of the community’s agricultural support system. The farmers, many of whom had never had access to regular veterinary services before, now see her as an indispensable resource. She has played a key role in reducing livestock mortality and improving the productivity of goat and poultry farming in the area. Her work not only enhances animal health but also boosts the income of the families who depend on livestock as a primary livelihood.

A Vision for the Future

Despite her already significant achievements, Junurani’s ambitions don’t stop here. She hopes to extend her services to even more villages within the Gram Panchayat, helping more families improve their livestock management practices. With ongoing support from Nydhee, she plans to expand her reach and ensure that every farmer in the area has access to the veterinary care their animals need.

Junurani also aspires to inspire other women in her community to follow a similar path. She actively motivates families who have not yet participated in the livestock vaccination efforts, encouraging them to see the benefits of proactive animal health care. Her role as a CAVE volunteer is not just about providing services but about fostering a culture of care, trust, and sustainability in her community.

A Lasting Impact

Junurani Naik’s story is a testament to the transformative power of grassroots initiatives that empower local people with practical skills and opportunities. Through the CAVE program, she has not only improved her own quality of life but has also contributed to the economic resilience of her entire community. By ensuring the health and well-being of livestock, she is helping to secure the livelihoods of countless families in Jinkapadi and beyond.

Her journey from a struggling homemaker to a community leader serves as an inspiration to women everywhere, showing that with the right support and determination, anyone can overcome adversity and become a force for positive change. As Junurani continues to grow and extend her impact, her work will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy in the villages she serves.
